Meet the Maliaka girls 2008 For a programme that took off three hours behind schedule, last Saturday’s launch of the 2008 Miss Malaika beauty pageant in Accra ended rather too soon. Invited guests and the media who waited that long to be among the first to see the 16 beautiful ladies cannot say they had an eyeful before the ladies were bussed back to the Malaika house to begin their 13 weeks television reality show. Perhaps it was intentional; the organisers, Charter House could not afford to give away too much at a time especially when the general public are expected to play a major part in the selection of the eventual winner. Against a background of cool music, the ladies made an impressive entry as the audience applauded in appreciation. They all looked like potential beauty queens, tall, elegant, pretty faces, slim and all beaming with smiles. Executive Director of Charter House Theresa Ayoade told the guests that Miss Malaika is the representation of Ghanaian beauty who possesses a unique combination of traditional and contemporary values. “She is the beauty who can stand up and be counted internationally and so will represent Ghana at Miss Malaika International come December”, she said. That view was shared by Deputy Minister of Tourism Mr Kofi Osei Ameyaw who described all the ladies as winners in their own right and urged them to remain confident at all times and portray Ghana in the best light whenever they had the opportunity. During the search for a beauty last April when the audition train stopped in Kumasi and Accra, many promising young, intelligent and beautiful ladies took up the challenge and after a second round of auditioning held in Accra in August, 16 finalists were chosen. The queen in waiting is among these 16 delegates whose names are Akosua Agyemang-Abrokwah, Faustina Michelle Ayonka, Christabel Ekeh, Christine Ofori, Daisy Edem Attu, Erika Thompson, Ivy Wereh and Mamata Adams. The rest are Nadra Osman, Racheal Obeng-Somuah, Sandra Odamtten, Sermira Adams, Tamara Aku Dzormeku, Naa Yemoley Tetteh, Yvonne Eyram Kofigah and Ama Sitsofe Sedegah. Since its introduction some six years ago, the Miss Malaika Ghana pageant, has been a search for the most beautiful and intelligent girl in Ghana. Right from the very beginning, the pageant has been positioned as a reality TV show, which offers participatory excitement for the viewing public as well as the delegates by allowing them to get close and personal to the delegates as they perform weekly tasks assigned to them. Previous Malaika queens have comprised Thelma Tawiah, Melissa Mensah, Patricia Akuamoah, Hamamat Montia and Laurie Naa Lamile Lawson. Who will be next?
